Rhinoplasty: What’s Involved

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a “nose job,” is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose for cosmetic or functional reasons, such as improving appearance, correcting a crooked nose, or fixing breathing issues. If you’re considering it, understanding the process and recovery can help you feel more prepared.
Consultation and Planning
Your journey begins with a consultation. During this visit, your surgeon will:
- Discuss your goals and expectations
- Review your medical history
- Examine your nasal structure
- Use photos or imaging to show potential results
This is also the time to ask questions and understand what is realistically achievable.
The Surgery
Rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia. There are two main approaches:
- Open Rhinoplasty: A small incision across the columella (between the nostrils) gives the surgeon full access to the nasal structure, ideal for complex changes.
- Closed Rhinoplasty: All incisions are made inside the nostrils, leaving no visible scars and often allowing a slightly faster recovery.
During surgery, the surgeon may reshape cartilage and bone, refine the tip, straighten the bridge, and improve airflow if necessary. Internal and external splints are placed to support the nose during healing.
Recovery
Healing takes time, and patience is key:
- Week 1: Swelling and bruising peak; splints are removed around day 7. Many people return to desk work or school after this period.
- Weeks 2–4: Bruising fades and swelling continues to subside. Social activities are usually possible.
- Weeks 4–6: Light exercise and daily activities resume, but avoid contact sports or heavy lifting.
- Up to 1 Year: The nose continues refining, especially the tip, with final results visible around 12 months.
